Despite a 10 a.m. tipoff, Saturday morning, in the opening round of the Rotary Roundball Classic in Charleston, South Carolina, No. 3 Calvert Hall College was wide awake and the Cardinals rolled to an easy 71-56 win over South Carolina’s Pinewood Prep.

The Cardinals may have left Pinewood a bit groggy as they outscored their foe 44-22 in the first half to all but lock up the victory.  Pinewood played a bit better in the second half, shaving seven points off its deficit, but never serious threatened.

The game was played with two 16 minute halves, as opposed to the customary four eight minute quarters. The format obviously suited the Cardinals (11-2 overall) just fine.

Nico Clareth and Evan Phoenix scored 19 points each to lead nine Cardinals in the scoring column. TJ Duckett also reached double figures for Calvert Hall with 10 points.

Calvert Hall moves into the semifinal round on Monday at 4 p.m. where it will face North Carolina’s Gaston Day.
