Cardinals rout No. 1 Friars to close the regular season; John Carroll; Loyola; Spalding and Gilman all win to set the final MIAA A Seeds; Playoff bracket here
No. 6 Calvert Hall traveled to top-ranked Archbishop Curley, Monday afternoon, and put an abrupt halt to the Friars’ 13 game win streak with a 9-4 victory to conclude the regulars season for both teams.
The win completed a Calvert Hall regular season-sweep of Curley, which began its win streak following an 8-0 loss to the Hall back in early April, signaling that the post-season is up for grabs.
Curley ace Paul Nixon took the loss, as he gave up three runs in three innings, but the Cardinals did not do their heavy damage until after he left the mound, touching up Jefferey Calderon for six run in 1.1 innings of work, including five in the top of the fourth when the Cardinals turned a 3-2 lead into an 8-2 bulge.
Calvert Hall cracked three home runs in the victory, as Garrett McIlhenney, J.P. Murphy and Jose Torres cleared the fences.
Murphy finished with two hits and four RBI’s and McIlhenney had two hits, two runs scored and two RBI’s.
Four Cardinals’ pitchers worked in the contest and Peter Marchineck went the first 4.2 innings to get the win. He allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits, while walking four and striking out four.
Jalen March was the only Curley player with two hits and he drove in a run.
Despite the loss Curley (25-4 overall, 15-3) will go into the MIAA A Conference double-elimination post-season tournament as the top seed.
The other five playoff teams also all won on Monday, so the final seeds for the tournament are set for what promises to be the most wide-open A Conference in recent memory.
John Carroll (19-4 overall, 14-4) defeated Mount St. Joseph, 7-0, in its regular season finale and is the second seed. The Friars and the Patriots both have opening round byes in the tournament and will play their first games on Monday, May 14th.
Calvert (17-8 overall) improved to 12-6 in the league and will be the third seed. The Cardinals will host sixth-seed Gilman (12-12 overall, 10-8), which closed with an 11-0 win over McDonogh, on Friday. Defending champion Loyola (14-9 overall, 11-7) defeated and eliminated St. Mary’s with a 4-1 victory on Tuesday. The Dons will host fifth-seeded Archbishop Spalding (16-11 overall, 10-8), which ripped St. Paul’s, 13-4, in Fridayay’s other opening round game.
Spalding and Gilman actually tied for fifth place but the tie-break went to the Cavaliers. The teams split their head-to-head games. Both were swept by Curley and both split with John Carroll, but Spalding managed a split with Calvert Hall, while the Greyhounds dropped both meetings with the Cardinals.
Curley will host the Loyola/Spalding winner and John Carroll will entertain the Calvert Hall/Gilman winner. The losers of Friday’s first round game will go into the elimination bracket and meet next Monday. The double-elimination play will continue throughout next week and the finals will be played at Harford Community College on Sunday, April 20th. If a second game is need for the finals it will also take place at HCC on Monday, April 21st.
