Nico Clareth scored 22 points and TJ Duckett and Evan Phoenix each added 16 points as top-ranked Calvert Hall College defeated Prince George’s County’s Riverdale Baptist in the opening round of the Gonzaga Classic at Gonzaga College in the District.

No. 14 Mount Carmel fell to event host Gonzaga, 80-57. Five players scored in double digits, led by Chris Lykes’ 18 points. Bryant Crawford added 16.

The Eagles, ranked No. 4 in the District region by the Washington Post, built a 40-29 halftime advantage. Frank Webb finished with 15 points for Mount Carmel (5-4 overall), and Montez Mathis added 11.

The Cougars will take on Prince George’s County’s Capital Christian Academy in a consolation semifinal Saturday afternoon at American University’s Bender Arena. Calvert Hall began its attempt to become the third straight Baltimore team (Mount St. Joseph won in 2013 and 2012) to win the prestigious District tourney crown.

Trailing 37-33 at halftime, the Cardinals (5-1) outscored Riverdale Baptist, 47-22, in the second half to adance Saturday’s semifinals against Philadelphia’s Roman Catholic. Junior forward Justin Gorham finished with 10 points for Calvert Hall.
