Defending MIAA A Conference ice hockey champion Calvert Hall earned a return trip to the title game, Tuesday, with a hard fought 4-2 victory over Mount St. Joseph, in a semifinal contest at Mount Pleasant Ice Rink.

The Cardinals (12-3) will meet top-seeded Archbishop Spalding which had a bye to the finals. The championship game will take place on Friday at 6:00 p.m. at Piney Orchard Ice Rink.

Calvert Hall, which had defeated St. Joe by a combined score of 17-3 in two regular season meetings, found the Gaels to be a much tougher foe this time around.

Senior Matt Curtin and freshman Mitchell Bozhko each scored in the first period to put Calvert Hall up, 2-0, early. The Gaels, however, countered with two second period goals to tie the contest heading into the final period.

Calvert Hall regained the lead on a score by senior Timmy Blount, with 12:07 to play. It remained a one goal game until the clock ticked under one minute, when Curtin iced the victory for the Cardinals with his second goal of the game.

Prior to last year’s title by the Cardinals, Spalding had won the two previous championships. In November, Calvert Hall and Spalding skated to a 2-2 draw, but the Cavaliers won the second meeting, 3-0, last week, to claim the top seed.

Also on Tuesday, Gilman blanked Boys’ Latin, 4-0, in a MIAA B Conference semifinal. The Greyhounds advance to the final where they will meet defending champ St. Paul’s. The B Conference championship game will also be played on Friday at Piney Orchard with the puck dropping at 4:00 p.m.
