Cardinals break away in second half; Shuey and Mic Kelly combine for 11 goals
Calvert Hall College lacrosse knows it will be a challenge defending its MIAA A Conference crown. The Cardinals are in play for a home quarterfinal match after a 16-6 victory over Severn School Friday in Anne Arundel County.
Shuey Kelly had six goals and an assist for Calvert Hall, and Mic Kelly added five goals. Ethan Long finished with two goals and two assists.
The Cardinals (5-4 overall and MIAA A), who lost at Archbishop Spalding Tuesday (14-8), had much better results in their return Friday to Anne Arundel County, outscoring Severn, 8-2, in the second half. Jojo Dean had a goal and two assists and Jordan Wray, EJ Vasile and Joe Duggan each found the back of the net.
Paul Baldwin finished with two goals and two assists for Severn. The Admirals (7-5, 4-5 MIAA A), who host St. Mary’s Tuesday afternoon, currently sit seventh in the league standings.
Calvert Hall is sixth heading into Tuesday’s rivalry match with Loyola Blakefield. The Cardinals need to win Tuesday and Boys’ Latin School lose its final two games to jump to fourth.
Boys’ Latin and Loyola are tied for fourth (both 5-3) and play Sunday morning at 11 on Lake Avenue. The Lakers host arch-rival St. Paul’s School Tuesday.
The MIAA A tourney, which this year has all 11 teams participating, starts Thursday with three opening round games, followed with four quarterfinal matches, Saturday May 15.
