In the District on a beautiful Saturday afternoon to open its 2015 football season, Calvert Hall College found it difficult to generate offense as it suffered a 28-7 loss to host Gonzaga College.

Calvert Hall (0-1) trailed 13-0 in the fourth quarter with Gonzaga driving for another score, but Cardinals’ cornerback Nijuel Hill came up with an interception in the end zone and BJ Watson capitalized with an electrifying 89-yard touchdown run, pulling the Cardinals within six, at 13-7, with 8 minutes, 14 seconds remaining in regulation.

The Cardinals, however, did not seize the momentum. Gonzaga’s Tyree Randolph countered with a 60-yard scoring run and later added a 2-yard TD rush to clinch the victory for the Purple Eagles (1-0).

Kicker Brian Johnson pushed the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference program on top with a pair of first quarter field goals and Gonzaga led 6-0 at the half. Early in the third quarter, Gonzaga went up 13-0 on a 3-yard touchdown run by Randolph, a junior, who finished the game with 166 yards rushing and three touchdowns on 29 carries.
