Top-ranked Calvert Hall College, facing the prospect of a three-game losing streak, Friday evening, and battled past visiting St. Maria Goretti, 60-57, for a much needed Baltimore Catholic League victory.

The Cardinals (15-4 overall, 5-2 BCL), playing without three starters for most of the game were embarrassed at No. 2 John Carroll School on Wednesday after losing at home to unranked Gilman School on Monday.

Senior Evan Phoenix scored a game-high 22 points and pulled down 13 rebounds on Friday and the Cardinals led most of the way, turning a 28-26 lead at the half into a 52-41 advantage after three quarters.

Drew Edwards also bounced back from an ejection at John Carroll to contribute 18 points and five rebounds for Calvert Hall. The Cardinals once again played without injured guards Nico Clareth and Reggie Rouse, but did receive 16 combined points from junior Justin Gorham (8 rebounds) and TJ Duckett.

Goretti (13-4, 4-3) had a big fourth quarter to rally within three. Elijah Clarance had three three-pointers and scored 17 points to lead the Gaels and Ameka Akaya netted 15. In addition, Toby Christenson and Chandler Penn combined for 17 more.
