No. 1 Calvert Hall built a big first half lead and had a handful of chances to win, both late in regulation and overtime, before eventually dropping an 82-78 decision to St. John’s (DC) in the opening round of the 2015 Alhambra Catholic Invitational, at Frostburg State University.

The Cardinals will now meet MIAA and BCL rival Mount Carmel on Friday in the consolation bracket, at 4:00 p.m. It will be the fifth meeting of the year between the Cardinals and Cougars. Mount Carmel lost 71-40 to Gonzaga.

The Cardinals started fast, building an 18-9 lead at the end of one quarter and holding a five point advantage at the half. The Cadets drew even and in the third quarter and the two teams took turns trading mini-runs.

St. John’s had three players score 20 points or more, led by Anthony Cowan, Jr., who netted 23 and had 10 rebounds for a double-double. Kyle Sykes added 22 points and five rebounds, while Jeffrey Dowtin, Jr. scored 20.

Drew Edwards scored 20 points to lead the Cardinals, while Nico Clareth and Justin Gorham had 16 points each and senior Evan Phoenix scored 15 points. Clareth had three three-pointers, but his layup attempt in the closing seconds of the first overtime, which would have won the game, was too strong. Clareth got a follow-up tip, but it also did not fall as time expired.
