On the a day when both defenses struggled, Calvert Hall jumped out to a 3-0 first inning lead and went on to defeat visiting Boys’ Latin, 7-4, in a MIAA non-league baseball game, Friday afternoon in Towson.
The two teams combined for seven errors and five unearned runs. Gave Nieto led the Cardinals at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored. A.C. Chavis hit a home run for Calvert Hall, while Spencer Blair doubled and Garrett Matheny tripled.
Calvert Hall, playing its season opener, used five pitchers to work the seven innings, with Matt Hentschel starting and throwing two scoreless to earn the win. He allowed two hits, struck out two and walked one.
The Lakers (1-2) managed five hits, with Jackson Gazin going 1-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI.
Ned Ruffin made the start for Boys’ Latin and pitched three innings, allowing four hits and five runs (three earned), while striking out two in earning the loss. Zach Grace pitched the final three frames for the Lakers, allowing two runs and striking out six.
