No. 17 Calvert Hall battled from behind three different times in its MIAA A Conference soccer match, Wednesday, at No. 7 Gilman, before ultimately stinging the Greyhounds with a 4-3 victory in overtime.
The Cardinals and Greyhounds have been two teams who have struggled to find goals this fall, but each got plenty on Wednesday. Gilman had leads of 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2, but the resilient Cardinals came back to tie each time, before Frank Assaro served up an assist to Tiger Whittman who scored the game winner in overtime.
Whittman had a hand in Calvert Hall’s first goal, as he assisted Brad McKim. McKim also scored the second Cardinal goal, this time on a feed from Camilo Sanchez.
The Cardinals gained their overtime chance following an unassisted goal by Dominic Fullano, to tie the contest at three.
Sam Wancowicz scored twice and had an assist to lead Gilman. Brendan Barger also scored for the Greyhounds.
The victory was huge for the Cardinals (4-5-1, 2-4-1), who are trying to climb into playoff position. Gilman fell to 5-4-1 overall and 3-4-1 in the A Conference.
