As far as difficult stops on anyone’s schedule goes, a journey from Baltimore to Hagerstown, on a frigid January night, to face powerful St. Maria Goretti in a Baltimore Catholic League basketball game, is about as tough as it gets these days.
No. 8 Calvert Hall, however, took it in stride, battling back from an eight-point halftime deficit to upend the host Gaels, 62-56, on Wednesday in Hagerstown. It was Calvert Hall’s 11th consecutive victory as they improved to 17-1 overall and 5-1 in the BCL.
Every night a different Cardinal seems to take the spotlight. Earlier this week Nico Clareth, who had five points and four rebounds against Goretti, scored 27 in a win over No. 7 John Carroll. Wednesday, teammate Drew Edwards took the lead, torching the Gaels for 29 points, eight rebounds, four steals and three assists.
Calvert Hall actually trailed by as many as 12 points, early in the third quarter, before going on a 16-0 run to stun a confident Goretti squad. The Cardinals led by three at the end of the third quarter, but the host Gaels (13-5, 4-2) managed to forge a 48-48 tie late in the fourth. Edwards, however, pushed the Cardinals back on top with a three-pointer, with 2:10 to play and Calvert Hall never trailed again.
TJ Duckett, part of the Cardinals’ emerging depth, added 14 points and five rebounds, while Sean Mayberry delivered 10 points seven assists and three rebounds. In addition, Evan Phoenix scored one hoop and collected seven rebounds.
Notre Dame bound Martin Geben had a big night for the Gaels, scoring 16 points and collecting 13 rebounds. He also blocked three shots. Toby Christensen also had a double-double for Goretti with 10 points and 10 rebounds, while Isaiah Harris-Winn scored 15 points.
