Calvert Hall had its hitting shoes on, Wednesday, ripping 16 hits and scoring 14 times in a 14-1, five-inning, MIAA A Conference baseball victory at McDonogh.
The Cardinals (21-2, 14-2 MIAA) hit four doubles, including two by James Elmore, who was 4-for-4 with seven RBI’s. JP Murphy was also 4-for-4 with a double, four runs scored and an RBI. Spencer Blair had the other two-bagger.
Also collecting two hits each were AC Chavis, Garrett Matheny and Jose Torres. Chavis and Matheny each had two RBI’s and they combined to score five runs. Torres scored once.
Matt Hentschel tossed a complete game for the Cardinals, going five innings, allowing three hits, no earned runs and striking out seven.
Reid Quinn had McDonogh’s only extra-base hit, a double, and Adam Rosenstein had an RBI.
Calvert Hall now has a two-game lead over second-place Archbishop Spalding with two games to play. The Cardinals can clinch the top-seed with one more win or one loss by Spalding. Calvert Hall hosts St. Mary’s on Friday and visits Spalding on Tuesday.
McDonogh (5-15 overall) fell to 4-12 in the league and was officially eliminated from playoff contention with this loss.
