Junior J. T. Lauman tossed a two-hitter with nine strikeouts to claim the win on the mound, as Boys’ Latin School advanced in the President’s Cup Baseball Tournament with a 15-1 win over Dunbar Thursday afternoon at Swann Park
Fred Bopst homered, tripled and singled to drive in five runs, to lead the Lakers’ offense. Boys’ Latin played solid defense throughout and broke the game open with five runs in the third inning, before finishing off the Poets, who reached last spring’s Class 1A state semifinals, with a 10-spot in the fifth.
In other opening round action Thursday, Poly handled Mervo, 11-1, and City College edged St. Frances Academy, 8-7. Friends moved on as Patterson forfeited their contest.
The tournament moves to quarterfinal play, starting Saturday morning with Poly at Gilman School. Friends is tenatively set to take Digital Harbor Thursday afternoon at a site to be determined.
The date and site for the other two quarterfinal matches with City vs. Mount St. Joseph and Archbishop Curley taking on Boys’ Latin School is to be determined.
