Boys’ Latin lost a nine point halftime lead, but battled back to nip host Chapelgate Christian, 53-52, in MIAA B Conference basketball, Wednesday in Marriottsville, as Casey Rees delivered the winning basket with just three seconds to play.
Rees, who scored 11 points in the contest, hit a driving layup in the final seconds to decide the tightly contested game.
After a low scoring first quarter, the Lakers established a 27-18 halftime lead. Chapelgate, however, dominated the third quarter, 24-13, to take a two-point lead into the final quarter.
Colin Heacock scored 14 points to lead four Lakers in double figures. Matt Rees and DJ Willoughby each scored 10 points for BL.
Jordon Bryant and Chris Grandy paced Chapelgate with 12 points each, while Gordie Frierson netted 10 points. Bryant also had nine rebounds, while Chika Obi had seven points and 11 boards for the Yellow Jackets.
With the victory, Boys’ Latin (7-7, 4-5) moved one game in front of Chapelgate (7-9, 3-6) in the B Conference standings, taking sole possession of sixth place in the league. Plenty of basketball is still to be played, but the race for the league’s six playoff spots is slowly developing.
