Henry Genth countered an early run by visiting St. Paul’s with an RBI double in the first inning and top-seeded Boys’ Latin would go on to score seven times over the first two innings, as the Lakers easily defeated 2nd-seeded St. Paul’s, 9-2, in the winners’ bracket final of the 2021 MIAA B Conference double-elimination baseball tournament, Thursday at BL.

Genth would finish the game with two RBI and a run scored. Peter Makris was 3-for-4 with a double and run scored and Braeden Hammett was 2-for-3 with a run scored and two driven home, while Kayden Lymon had two hits and scored a run.

“I was able to get three hits today because I was looking for a first pitch fastball,” said Makris. “We jumped on top early in this one by getting seven runs in the first two innings.”

Hammett said it was a team effort.

“We had some great hitting from everyone today,” he said. “It’s amazing for me to have a chance to go back to the championship game. I was able to go 2-for-3 at the plate, but we had great hitting from everybody today.”

On the bump, Liam Karey contained the slugging Crusaders through six innings of work. He threw 98 pitches, allowing just two hits and two runs (1 earned) while striking out five and walking two. Vinny Arhur worked a scoreless seventh, allowing one hit and striking out one.

“My fastball and curveball were working well and I mixed in a slider and splitter once or twice,” said Karey of his performance

Jack Van Valkenburgh and Charles Konkolics had one RBI each for St. Paul’s (17-2).

The Lakers (13-5) now move to the tournament finals which will begin on their home field on Monday. BL needs just one win to take the crown, while their opponent will need to win twice. Boys’ Latin will face the winner of Friday’s final elimination game as Indian Creek will visit St. Paul’s.

“This was a big win for us,” said veteran Boys’ Latin coach Bill Greenwell. “We’re going to the championship, and I was as excited about this game as any game I’ve ever been involved in.

It’s great having a rival like St. Paul’s here and were both playing good baseball. We made a lot of good defensive plays; we got a good outing on the mound from Liam Karey, and we had some real good approaches at the plate.”
