Playing in front of an excellent crowd, Boys’ Latin took on St. Amdrew’s (FL), Friday night in South Florida, and escaped with a 7-6 victory over a lacrosse program which is perennially Florida’s best.
Leading 5-4 midway through the final quarter, Boys’ Latin surrendered two quick goals and trailed 6-5, before rallying for the win with a pair of scores in the game’s final two minutes. Colin Heacock, on a feed from Shack Stanwick, tied the contest with 1:30 left, just seconds after the expiration of an extra man situation for BL. Junior faceoff specialist Bryan Lichtenauer was fouled during the ensuing draw and the Lakers again had an extra man opportunity. Again, Stanwick triggered a score, assisting Michael Lynch for the winning goal with just one second left on the clock.
Stanwick was the catalyst for the Lakers all night, as he finished with four assists.
After a scoreless first quarter, BL tallied three goals and held a 3-1 lead at the half as Geroge Rice, Tally Bruno and Lynch each netted single goals. The Lakers also scored the first goal of the third quarter but watched the Scots score two goals in a six-second span to pull within one. Each team scored once more in the third and the Lakers led 5-4 as the final period got underway.
Robbie Burd and Max Pons highlighted a solid defensive effort from the Lakers. The pair triggered the events that led BL’s tying goal late in the fourth quarter when they jumped a pick behind the goal and put the ball on the ground. Pons picked it up and was pushed from behind for a 30 second penalty at the two minute mark.
The Lakers (4-0) will return to Baltimore this week and play home games against St. Stephens/St. Agenes (VA), on Friday, and Fallston, next Monday.
