Boys’ Latin, a team which is considered a title contender in the MIAA B Conference, overcame oppressive heat and a talented Landon squad to open its 2014 football season with a 31-28 victory, Saturday, over the visiting Bears.

Junior quarterback Logan Wisnauskas completed 10-of-23 passes, including two touchdown throws to Dylan Gaines, and senior Stephon Hill returned a punt 60 yards for a TD. Jerel Archer added a 2-yard touchdown run for the Lakers and kicker/punter Dom Maggio was a weapon as well.

Maggio connected on a 40-yard first quarter field goal, was 4-for-4 on extra point attempts and averaged 45 yards on his punts.  His field goal proved to be the only first half points for BL, which trailed 14-3 at the break.

Davy Lizana and Braden Atkinson also contributed, each making big catches which setup scores.

Defensively, the Lakers were lead by Devin Shewell, Preston Waters, Luke Brown and Rocco Bruno.  Hill lead a young secondary and deflected two passes. One was intercepted by Dimtri Lezcano.  In addition, Billy Wingo, Michael Short and Gavin howell all contributed to the victory.
