Two squads with championship pedigrees will battle, on Sunday, in the 2013 MIAA B Conference championship game, after Boys’ Latin and Gerstell Academy each advanced to the final with semifinal victories, on Wednesday.

Defending B Conference title holder Boys’ Latin (12-5-1), the second seed this fall, advanced with a 1-0 victory over rival Friends, at BL.  Gerstell, the third seed, knocked off top-seeded Severn, 2-1, in the other semifinal.

At Boys’ Latin, the only goal of the contest came in the 12th minute, when Brian Becker headed home a shot of a Hunter Moreland throw-in.

The Laker defense took care of things from there, as the visiting Quakers (11-6-2) never threatened.

In Severna Park, Gerstell (15-6-0) knocked Severn, 2-1, to avenge of pair of overtime losses to the Admirals in the regular season.

Junior Braden Silcott didn’t waste any time. After receiving a long service from Casey Gruber, he sprinted through the Severn defense and found the net to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead just three minutes into the match.  Then with only seconds left in the first half, Severn evened the match, at 1-1, as Zac Davliakos scored his 18th goal of the season for the Admirals (14-3-2).

As the second half started it looked like it could be déjà vu all over again – another overtime period, until senior Ben Higgins found the net from outside the penalty area to give the Falcons a 2-1 lead.  Falcon goalkeeper, Brett McLaughlin made two phenomenal saves during the match to keep the Falcons alive.

McLaughlin made one final save, tipping the ball over the crossbar as the whistle blew to end the match.  The entire Gerstell bench erupted and rushed out to celebrate the victory.

Boys’ Latin, which has won six previous B Conference crowns, more than any other school, will meet Gerstell on Sunday, at 3:15 p.m., at Archbishop Spalding.  Gerstell is in its first season in the B Conference after winning back-to-back C Conference championships.
