2017 VSN BOYS’ LACROSSE CO-COACH OF THE YEAR
BRYAN KELLY, CALVERT HALL COLLEGE
Kelly guided his alma-mater back atop the nation’s premier league this spring. The longtime Cardinal headman is Varsity Sports Network’s Boys’ Lacrosse Co-Coach of the Year.
The Towson school won its first MIAA A Conference crown since 2012, capped with an impressive 12-6 decision over 2016 champ McDonogh School at Johns Hopkins University. Calvert Hall went 11-0 in league play.
After a couple of “early stumbles” in non-league play, Kelly said Calvert Hall was confident heading into the grind of MIAA A play.
“We knew we would fix the ship,” said Kelly. “It all started with our senior leadership and captains.”
The Cardinals won their final 15 decisions after dropping back-to-back matches to Pennsylvania schools Malvern Prep and Conestoga. Kelly said the foundation for this spring’s title run was established by last spring’s senior leaders.
“They showed our guys how to lead and how to care for the younger guys,” said Kelly.
Unlike the 2012 team that had the pressure of being the preseason No. 1 team in the nation, Kelly’s Cardinal squad this spring had a workman-like mentality.
“No one care who got the glory,” Kelly said.
The longest tenured coach in the MIAA A, Kelly has the most league titles (three) among active coaches. A 1987 graduate of The Hall and an All-American defensemen on North Carolina’s 1991 national championship squad, Kelly is 245-114 in 22 seasons with MIAA A titles in 2005, 2012 and 2017.
