Calvert Hall star and University of Maryland signee led the Cardinals to the MIAA A Conference playoffs
Recent Calvert Hall graduate Ben Bender, a standout midfielder for the Cardinals’ soccer team, was named Maryland’s 2019-2020 Gatorade State Boys Soccer Player of the Year, on Monday.
The award not only recognizes outstanding athletic excellence but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character on and off the field.
Bender, a University of Maryland signee, scored 14 goals last fall in leading Calvert Hall to a 9-7-1 record a spot in the MIAA A Conference playoffs. He also had four assists last season and earned an invite to the High School All-American Game in December. He’s the third player from Calvert Hall to win the award.
Bender joins all the other state winners who are now in contention to be named the Gatorade National Boys Soccer Player of the Year, which will be announced later this month. Also to be announced on June 18 are the Gatorade Girls State Soccer Players of the Year.
