Cougars power past Gerstell in boys basketball opener
Our Lady of Mount Carmel host Gerstell Academy in each team’s MIAA A Conference basketball opener, Wednesday night in Essex, and the host Cougars took control early, powering their way to a 70-46 victory.
Mount Carmel gained command in the early stages by applying defensive pressure and running its offense effectively.
Senior Toby Nnadozie, now in his second season with Cougars after transferring from Perry Hall prior to his junior year, shared team-high scoring honors with junior Deon Perry, as both netted 12 points.
In addition, Kevin Kalu, a 6-foot-8 senior center, who transferred in from Baltimore’s City College, added 11 points for Mount Carmel.
The Cougars limited Gerstell to just 17 first half points, while they netted 19 in each of the first two periods to lead 38-17 at the half.
Gerstell’s Jeremiah Stanton led all scorers with 16 points and Dayyan Noble added 10 for the Falcons (1-1 overall).
