2016-2017 MIAA A CONFERENCE
SWIMMING CHAMPIONS
LOYOLA BLAKEFIELD DONS

As the New England Patriots look to win another Super Bowl (sorry Raven fans), the greatest dynasty in the history of the MIAA keeps on rolling. Saturday, Loyola Blakefield repeated as MIAA A swimming champions at McDonogh School’s Roseburg Aquatic Center.

The Dons (479 points) placed first in six events to distance second-place McDonogh for their fifth straight league championship and 20th in the last 21 seasons. The lone break in Loyola’s impressive run came in 2012 when McDonogh hoisted the championship plaque.

Dons coach Matt McDonough, who succeeded Keith Schertle (stepped down after 2014-15 season) said the learning curve was much easier this season.

“Last year, it was about getting to know me and that wasn’t easy,” said McDonough. “We’re on a completely different page, in a good way, from last year. A lot of more trust, a lot more understanding what we needed to do.”

“We’ve become close through all the practices, laughs and tough times,” said Dons junior Adam Musselman.

The Dons received individual titles from sophomores Matt Clark (200-yard freestyle and 500 freestyle) and Will Pelton (200) and junior Ben Shropshire (100 butterfly). The Towson school also placed first in the 200 medley relay and the event’s final race, the 400 freestyle relay.

First-place showing from Derek Nguyen (100 breastsroke) and Ben Selnick (50 freestyle) spearheaded the Eagles’ second-place finish. Nguyen, Selnick, junior Alexander Zuga and senior James Shields clocked 1 minute, 27.25 seconds in the 200 freestyle.

Calvert Hall College junior Josh Walker won the 200 IM with a school-record 1:52.15. He was denied a second title as Archbishop Spalding senior Daniel Johnson overtook him in the 100 freestyle finale.

Johnson’s victory was the first A title for the Cavaliers, who placed fifth overall. Calvert Hall (345) and Mount St. Joseph (230) finished third and fourth, respectively, with Gilman (159) sixth.

Clark and Pelton along with Nguyen garnered All-American consideration with their individual performances Saturday. Pelton and Clark was joined by Teddy Turrall and Graham Lindner on the first-place 400 freestyle relay. Pelton, Gabe Moreno, Shropshire and Linder clocked 1:36.16 in the 200 medley relay.

Just another day at the office for the Dons.

“The leadership of the older guys, they show the younger guys how it’s done,” said senior Michael Pierce. “We all just come together and get another championship.”
