Saturday morning in the New York a pair of local cross country runners, Maria Coffin of Annapolis High School and and Dalton Hengst of McDonogh School each posted top ten finishes at the 2016 Foot Locker Cross Country Championships – Northeast Regional, as both qualifyed for the National Finals this Saturday in San Diego, Ca.
In the boys’ race, Hengst, who has won two consecutive MIAA individual titles, covered the course at Van Courtlandt Park in the Bronx in 15:45 to place fifth in the regional race. Coffin, who has won two straight 4A state titles, finished third in the girls’ race with a time of 18:00.
Four other girls from the Maryland/DC area also qualified as Page Lester (National Cathedral, 5th, 18:05), Hayley Jackson (Patuxent, 6th, 18:06), Abigail Green (Walter Johnson, 9th, 18:09) and Julien Webster (Catoctin, 10th, 18:09), while William Merrit of Smithsburg High School (6th, 15:45), qualified in the boys’ race.
The National Championship race, which will also include runners from the South, Midwest and West Regionals, will take place at 10:00 a.m. (Pacific) at San Diego’s Balboa Park.
