Eagles rally past Old Mill, complete perfect run to summer league championship

by Derek Toney

After some expected growing pains in its first season in the  MIAA A Conference last winter, Annapolis Area Christian School is hoping for a smoother experience this coming season. The Eagles got an early boost of confidence Friday, winning their summer league with a 45-38 decision over Old Mill in the final inside the Kilby Athletic Center in Severn.

Rising senior post Aaron Celsius had 14 points and Dylin Borden scored six of his 11 points in a critical late second half run. Rising senior guard Avion Robinson finished with a game-best 23 points for Old Mill.

AACS scored the game’s final 10 points, completing a perfect run (13-0) through the league. The Eagles defeated Indian Creek School, 51-41, while Old Mill routed southern Maryland’s Leonardtown.

The Patriots, who won the Anne Arundel County title and reached the Class 4A state final four last season, led 23-15 late in the opening half, but AACS closed strong to cut the margin to 23-20.

The Eagles scored the first six points of the second half, capped with a Celsius basket, for a 26-23 advantage. Old Mill regained the lead at 38-35 as Robinson scored 13 of the Patriots’ 15 points.

A Celsius score, followed by two free throws from Borden put AACS put back in front, 39-38. Eddie Scott finished with 10 points for the Eagles.
