The 2016-17 Gilman basketball team has a mixture of talent and experience that may be add up to a very solid roster, despite the graduation of some key parts from last year’s squad.
The top returning players are seniors Donald Duncan, a 3-year starter who averaged 9 points and 3 assists per game last winter, and Douglas Cooper, a four-year varsity performer with elite talent looking for a breakout season after struggling with a knee injury.
Junior Brandon Madison is also back after averaging 7 points per game in 2015-16, while sophomore Jalen Rucker, who saw significant time last year as a freshman, is expected to emerge as one of the top point guards in the MIAA A Conference. One of the more intriguing Greyhounds will be sophomore Ciaran Sandy, a transfer from England who provides length, with a big upside, at the wing forward position. In addition, junior Charlie Darby, who provided Gilman with a scoring boost off the bench last year, is expected to be in the starting lineup this season.
“This year’s group will be the sum of its parts,” said head coach Owen Daly, now in his eighth season. “With an excellent back court, team-oriented role players in the front court, and an overall commitment to working together, this group of Greyhounds has the potential to be the most cohesive group in recent memory. Moreover, we believe as a staff that this group has the drive to reach its full potential and we are thrilled to have the opportunity to coach this exceptional group of young men.”
