Panthers upend No. 6 Boys’ Latin in tournament

Pallotti coach Dennis Murphy (kneeling) talks to his team during a timeout at the Charm City Challenge earlier this month. The No. 12 Panthers will play for Bullis Holiday Classic title Sunday after defeating No. 6 Boys’ Latin School in a semifinal Saturday in Potomac.

For the second straight year, St. Vincent Pallotti boys basketball team will play for the Bullis Holiday Classic championship. The No. 12 Panthers advance to the final, courtesy of a 63-58 victory over sixth-ranked Boys’ Latin School, in a semifinal match Saturday in Montgomery County.

Anthony Blunt finished with 17 points, and junior Joemel McNair added 13 for Pallotti (5-5 overall). Cameron Watts posted a game-high 26 points for Boys’ Latin (9-2), and Loyola University recruit Cameron Spencer had 15.

Pallotti overcame an early 10-point deficit, outscoring the Lakers, 41-30, in the second half to earn a shot at a second straight Bullis title. The Panthers will play Sidwell Friends School (DC), Sunday afternoon at 1:30 p.m, for the crown.

Gilbert Otoo chipped in 11 points for Pallotti, which trailed 16-6 after the first quarter and 28-22 at halftime. The Laurel school rallied in the third, outscoring BL, 16-7, to take a 38-35 lead. McNair, who scored all his 13 points in the second half, had seven.

Boys’ Latin which outlasted Pallotti, 56-53, in last year’s MIAA A tourney quarterfinals, will play tourney host Bullis School in the consolation match, Sunday morning at 11:45.
