Red-hot Archbishop Curley took over the No. 1 position in the VSN Boys Soccer Top 20 this week and, Tuesday, the Friars also moved into first-place in the MIAA A Conference with a 2-0 home win over No. 9 Gilman.

Alejandro Arbelaez and Matt Brummet netted the Curley goals, with both coming in the game’s final 30 minutes.

The victory puts the Friars in commanding position in their battle with No. 2 Mount St. Joseph and No. 3 Calvert Hall for one of the league’s first two seeds which provides a first round playoff bye and a home game in the semifinals.

With two games to play, Wednesday at St. Paul’s and Friday at Gilman, Curley (16-3-2, 10-2-1) has 34 points in the standings and needs just four more to clinch the top spot. The Friars, own the tie-break over both the Gaels (32 points) and Cardinals (31 points) in either a three-way or two-way tie, while St. Joe owns the tie-break over Calvert Hall.

In addition to its regular finale against Curley, Gilman will be at Archbishop Spalding on Wednesday. The Greyhounds (8-5-4, 6-5-3, 21 points) trail McDonogh by three points in the battle for the fourth seed, which provides a home game in the quarterfinal round.
