Mount Carmel which raced up to No. 4 in the latest VSN Boys Basketball Top 20 on the strength of a 7-0 start, suffered its first loss of the season, Monday, as an unranked Archbishop Spalding squad surprised the visiting Cougars, 66-55, in a MIAA A Conference/Baltimore Catholic Game played in Anne Arundel Country.

Spalding (5-3 overall, 2-2 MIAA, 1-2 BCL) led by one point at the half and then dialed up the defense, limiting the Cougars (7-1, 3-1, 2-1) to just 24 second half points in pulling away for the second half victory.

Buzz Anthony and Derrick Hinton each scored 14 points for Spalding and Barry McCormick had 13, with Hinton and McCormick combining to make seven three-pointers. Defensively, the Cavaliers limited Mount Carmel star Terry Nolan, Jr. to just 11 points, well below his scoring average.

Senior Christian Evans led the Cougars with 18 points and junior Brandon Watson netted 15.
