In its banner season Patterson Mill has become the first Class 1A baseball team to ever be ranked in the Top 5 of the metro area. Despite being among the state’s smallest enrollment schools, the Huskies have proven they belong among the big boys.

VSN’s No. 4 Huskies will play in the 1A State semifinals tomorrow at McCurdy Field in Frederick versus Pikesville of Baltimore County and they have a legitimate shot at going all the way. Patterson Mill is so highly regarded because they have won the Chesapeake Division of the Upper Chesapeake Bay Athletic Conference, 20 games (20-3) including two over 4A State semifinalist and No. 6 Bel Air (17-4) and they routed 3A state semifinalist, No. 18 Aberdeen (15-7) by 14-3.

The pair of victories over Bel Air are really impressive considering that the Bobcats have been ranked as high as No. 5, as they are this week, this season and stunned then No. 6 Howard, 3-0 in the 4A North Region final last week to advance to their respective final four. Bel Air was ranked No. 12 at the time, but started their regional with a 12-1 rout of then No. 20 Kenwood and slipped by a surging Catonsville, which had just pulled off a huge 7-2 upset of then No. 4 Dulaney in the region quarterfinals, by 1-0.

Bel Air and Aberdeen are not the only ranked teams defeated by the Huskies this spring. No. 20 North Harford got as high as No. 13 on the way to a 14-8 campaign, but two the losses by the Hawks, the defending 3A North Region champs, were dealt by the Huskies by scores of 6-5 and 11-10. Also, C. Milton Wright, a 3A North club that was once ranked No. 11, split with the Huskies, winning 7-6, but losing 3-2.

Bohemia Manor that finished 16-4 overall, was in the poll at No. 19 at one time, but lost to Patterson Mill, 6-5 in the 1A North region semis and Class 2A East Region finalist Fallston (13-8), which held No. 20 in late season, was knocked off twice by the Huskies. The Millers edged Fallston, 4-2 and hammered them 10-0 in the second meeting.

Howard County’s Mount Hebron (15-7) made the biggest leap, vaulting from No. 20 to No. 12 after finishing as the 3A East Region runner-up. The Vikings, who had to fight off injuries this season as they attempted to repeat as the 3A East champions, made quite a run at the end winning two region games over ranked teams.

Mount Hebron edged then No. 13 Reservoir, 2-1, and followed it up with a 4-2 upset of No. 9 River Hill (16-5). River Hill was the Howard County champion by a half game over Howard, 12-4 to 11-4. Advancing to the region final, the Vikings pushed No. 2 Chesapeake before dropping a 3-2 decision.

Francis Scott Key was ripped by No. 11 Marriotts Ridge, 15-1 in the 2A West semifinals dropping from No. 15 to No. 19. FSK did not fall out of the rankings because they deserve credit for taking two out of three games from Carroll County Champion and No. 15 Westminster by scores of 3-2 and 4-1.

The Owls avoided the 3-game sweep by taking the county title game, 6-1 over Francis Scott Key. What a wild season.
