Eagles rout Loyola, 15-0

Matt SpindThe McDonogh baseball team will not be going to the MIAA A Conference baseball playoffs, but the Eagles did create a lasting memory for the 2017 season, Monday, when sophomore Matt Spind tossed a six-inning no-hitter against playoff-bound Loyola Blakefield, leading the Eagles to a 15-0 victory.

Spind needed just 69 pitches to navigate the contest, striking out seven. Only a single walk and a defensive error kept him from a perfect game.

His teammates did the rest collecting 10 hits and drawing 10 walks against Loyola pitchers to create numerous scoring opportunities. However, only one McDonogh hit, a double by Jack Kinney, went for extra-bases.

McDonogh scored once in the top of the first and it remained a 1-0 ballgame through three innings. McDonogh started to take charge with four runs in the fourth and then added three in the fifth. The Eagles then landed the knockout blow with a 7-run sixth inning.

Kinney was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBI and Will Margraff was 2-for-4 with a run scored and a pair of RBI.

Evan Hertzberg, Dillon Brown, Gayson Lawrence, Reid Quinn, David Renbaum and Spind each drove home one run.

Loyola (9-11 overall) is now 9-7 in league play and still solidly in fourth place in the MIAA A Conference. McDonogh (6-15 overall) improved to 5-12 in league play with the victory.
