No. 1 Calvert Hall pulls away from Severn; Bugliosi and Curry combine for eight goals

curry and bugliosiThere's no such concept as looking past an MIAA A Conference lacrosse opponent. With a key match with Boys' Latin School looming, Calvert Hall College had to play at a snake-bitten Severn School, desperate to kick start its faint post-season aspirations, Friday afternoon.

In a tight match in the third quarter, the Cardinals showed why they're the consensus No. 1 team in the area, pulling away from the No. 9 Admirals for a 13-6 decision in Anne Arundel County. Ohio State University recruit J.T. Bugliosi had five goals, and Brendan Curry added three goals and an assist.

The Hall (12-2 overall), ranked No. 9 nationally by US Lacrosse, ran off seven unanswered goals to move to 6-0 in the nation's premier boys' lacrosse league. Tuesday, the Cardinals host second-ranked BL, a 12-7 winner over No. 7 Loyola Blakefield Friday afternoon, in a battle of the MIAA A's lone unbeatens.

Calvert Hall coach Brian Kelly was happy to leave Severn's Water Street campus with a win.

"They're a very talented offensive team and they're very physical," said Kelly, the dean of the MIAA A coaching fraternity (21st season at his alma-mater). "They knocked a couple of our kids out early which was tough, but I thought our kids kept their composure and battled hard."

Up 5-2 at halftime, Calvert Hall's lead was sliced to 6-5 after Michael Lamon's tally with 4 minutes, 33 seconds remaining in the third quarter. A little more than minute later, Curry, a senior midfielder bound to Syracuse University, restored order with an unassisted strike.

Bugliosi, PJ Peters and Colin Allen followed with unassisted scores before Bugliosi and Daniel Kelly converted extra-man opportunities. Trey Smith finished a pass from John Connelly, putting Calvert Hall in command, 13-5, with 3:11 remaining in regulation.

"We rode the momentum. We started winning faceoffs," said Curry. "Shots started falling, we hit a couple of pipes. We started taking better shots."

Curry and Bugliosi each found the net twice in the second quarter, putting Calvert Hall up 5-1. Severn, which reached the MIAA A final four last spring, got a goal from Mandish with just eight seconds before halftime.

The Admirals carried the momentum into the third quarter, scoring three of the first four goals, to close within a score. With 3:22 remaining in the period, Curry stopped the run and completed his hat trick.

Daniel Kelly added two goals and an assist for the Cardinals, while Peters, Allen and Smith netted one goal each. Jacob Kelly contributed a pair of assists. In addition, goalkeeper Liam Darragh anchored an outstanding defensive effort with 12 saves.

Severn (9-8 overall) was led by two goals each from Dylan Gorger and Joel Mandish. Charlie Olmert had a goal and an assist, Mike LaMonica scored once and Andrew Volk had an assist.

The Admirals fell to 0-6 in league play and will miss the playoffs after breaking a long post-season draught last year.
